How to defend in NBA 2k11
Many players have trouble defending, and tend to depend on the CPU doing their defence for them. In this post I will try to explain the basics of defending in NBA 2k11, and hopefully expand your game by helping you improve your defense.
There are three ways of defending in NBA 2k11:
* Let the CPU defend for you
* Defend manually
* A mixture of manual and CPU defending
Most people tend to let the CPU defend for them, as they find manual defense to hard. This is done by simply avoiding to controll the player who is matched up with the opposition player who's got the ball. However, this is not recommended if you wish to improve your game, and can also be easily exploited by good players.
Manual defense is usually the method used by skilled players in NBA 2k11. It gives you the opportunity to cut off the opponent(hold left trigger + move right stick in the direction you want to cut), steal(press X/square), charge( B/circle), block ( Y/triangle ) and take hands up to avoid passes/ jump shots ( move right stick towards the ballhandler ) Many players find this to complex to overcome, but by giving it time, ones game will eventually improve. There are good ways of getting you started, and one of them is to play the My Player mode, where you constantly have to cope with 1 on 1 situations. Another hint is to switch your camera angle to "2K", where both manual defense and driving becomes easier. However, it does somewhat decrease your overview of the court. Again, it's important to stress that it takes time to master manual defense, and many tend to give up after getting ankle breaked far to many times during a game. Therefore, patience is key.
A mixture of both manual and CPU defending can be considered a good solution, as it gives opportunities not possible while using pure manual defense. Basically, it gives you the option to controll a player while a CPU defends the ballhandler, so that you can mark out players that try to get open. This is crucial when it comes to marking out 3 point shooters, but is also extremly effective when defending against players who drive alot, by starting of by defending the ballhandler manually, and then switching to another player as soon as the ballhandler tries to drive. This makes the CPU automatically cut off the defender, and if the ballhandler manages to get past, you'll have a player(preferably a center or power forward) in the post ready to block. However, many consider this as "cheesy" defending, and most of the respectable online leagues therefore deny people using it.
Overall, defending is a very important part of NBA 2k11, and if your skills are lacking, you'll never be able to become a good player. The only way of getting good at it is pretty much by practicing, and I would recommend everyone giving manual defense a go. However, starting of with a mixture of manual and CPU defending, can be considered a good idea; just don't get to dependent on it.
